Your dream cast for 'True Detective' season two: Meryl Streep, Sandra Bullock, Jack Nicholson ...
Now that the first iteration of HBO's buzzy "True Detective" is a thing of the past, let's play armchair casting director for the second season. Specifically, which A-listers do you want to fill the shoes of Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson?
Remember, "True Detective" is HBO's version of "American Horror Story," an anthology series that will reportedly change its cast, location and story every season. By producing a short eight-episode run, prestigious HBO will be able to convince movies stars of all shapes, sizes and paychecks to join them on the project. (It also doesn't hurt that the show has such incredible potential to win its cast and crew boatloads of Emmys.)
HBO scored Oscar winner McConaughey ("Dallas Buyers Club") and Emmy nominee Harrelson ("Game Change") for the just-concluded first season, but can they top themselves next year?
In Gold Derby's TV forum, I asked for your season two dream cast and you delivered big time with some spectacular out-of-the-box choices. Most of you are in agreement that the next season should focus on a female detective pairing, or even a male-female combo, instead of the same male duo we got in Season One.
Below, just some of your brilliant suggestions:
Opera Junky: I like the idea a contrasting pair... how about Viola Davis as a seasoned detective paired with an agent from INTERPOL to solve a case with international implications. The INTERPOL agent would be played by the sublime Olivia Coleman, who would have been my choice for an Emmy if "Broadchurch" had been eligible in the US.
taloson: On Twitter I saw someone suggest Kyle MacLachlan and Sherilyn Fenn, which would be amazing because it would basically be our only chance at a pseudo-"Twin Peaks" continuation. And assuming they keep the same creepy atmosphere, it would fit even more!
vinny: Aaron Paul and either Bryan Cranston or Kathryn Erbe.
outsider: Helen Mirren and Sandra Bullock, or Robert Downey Jr. and Mark Ruffalo.
Atypical: Time for two women next season. Regina King's my first choice. Pair her up with a veteran actress to counter. Frances McDormand? Sigourney Weaver?
Macbeth: Bruce Dern and Jack Nicholson. Honestly, I'd love to see Lupita Nyong'o paired with someone -- maybe someone like the aforementioned McDormand or Weaver.
Actriz: Helen Mirren and Judi Dench.
Nessie: Jodie Foster and Sandra Bullock, with Jodie in a Rust-like role and Sandra as the Marty character, married with kids and always hitting on hot guys (with much male nudity).
Beau S.: Robert De Niro and Al Pacino, or Meryl Streep and Glenn Close, or Jerry Seinfeld and Jason Alexander.
And of course, I couldn't resist getting in on the fun either. My dream scenario would feature Ian McShane as a grizzled detective ready for retirement and Jennifer Garner as his estranged daughter who gets transferred to his precinct against both of their wishes because of her prior knowledge on the case. The stars of "Deadwood" and "Alias" on screen together for the first time? How could you not watch?!

‘Angie’ wows Oscar rehearsal actors
LOS ANGELES, Calif. To the world, she's a humanitarian, superstar actress and half of Hollywood's most glamorous couple.
But to the c who met Angelina Jolie Thursday at Oscar rehearsals, she was just "Angie."
The 38-year-old Oscar winner, who was honoured with the film academy's Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award last year, came to the Dolby Theater to run through the lines she'll say in front of millions on Sunday.
Afterwards, she hung around chatting to show producers and introduced herself as "Angie" to a group of college students serving as trophy carriers this year.
"You'll help make the night a fun night," she said warmly to the starstruck students. One told her, "You were great out there."
"I didn't fall!" Jolie replied with a smile, confessing that the silver peep-toe pumps she paired with capri pants and a sweater for the rehearsal are her actual show-day shoes.
"After you've done this a few times, you learn to wear the shoes you're going to present in," she said.
She also learned she needed the teleprompter text to be made a bit larger.
"I used to wear glasses," she said.
Jolie presented an award on stage, and when a rehearsal actor stepped up to claim it, she gave him a hug.

Cab riders predict ‘American Hustle’ to win Oscar
City cab riders flagged “American Hustle” as most likely to win Best Picture in the Academy Awards on Sunday in a back-seat survey conducted by the Taxi and Limousine Commission.
They also predicted that Jennifer Lawrence, who plays a con man’s wife in the film, would catapult past Lupita Nyong’o of “12 Years a Slave” for Best Supporting Actress — giving her 45 percent of passengers’ votes compared with 23 percent for Nyong’o.
Between Feb. 3 and Friday, almost 120,000 riders used Taxi TV to cast their votes.
For Best Actress, Sandra Bullock scored 35 percent of the vote for her role as an engineer on her first shuttle mission in the space thriller “Gravity” — beating out Amy Adams, who got 24 percent for her con-artist role in “American Hustle.”
Riders also expected “The Wolf of Wall Street” to do well, and voted for Leonardo DiCaprio and Jonah Hill as most likely to score Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor for their performances.
DiCaprio was a clear winner with 40 percent of the votes. But riders also liked Bradley Cooper in “American Hustle” as a close runner-up to Hill, with the two earning 23 and 24 percent, respectively.
Steve McQueen was also a favorite with the back-seat crowd and considered most likely to win the Best Director award for “12 Years a Slave.”
He squeaked past close competitor Alfonso Cuarón, who directed “Gravity.”
More than half of voters picked “Frozen” for Best Animated Feature, followed by “Despicable Me 2,” which got 29 percent.
Conan Freud, the TLC’s chief operating officer, told The Post that taxis and the movies go together — from “It’s a Wonderful Life” to “Scrooged,” “Taxi Driver” and “Home Alone 2.”
His favorite cab cameo is Eddie Murphy’s ride to Queens in “Coming to America.”
“Of course, a real taxi can’t handle that much luggage, but I have absolute confidence that our cabbies are every bit as willing to go the extra mile as Jake Steinfeld’s character was,” he said of that film.
Freud said that despite riders’ penchant for “American Hustle” and “Gravity” star Bullock, he will be rooting this Sunday for “Captain Phillips” and Cate Blanchett, nominated for Best Actress in “Blue Jasmine.”
“I think that part of the fun for some survey participants may have been thinking about how taxis and cabbies have earned their place in movie history while they voted,” he said.
The TLC began surveying riders for the first time last year.
They predicted “Lincoln” would scoop up the Best Picture award — but it was beaten out by political thriller “Argo.”
Riders did correctly pick Daniel Day-Lewis as Best Actor for “Lincoln,” as well as “Brave” for Animated Feature.
