‘Tammy’ can’t beat ‘Transformers’ at box office

July Fourth went off like a dud at the box office, as the Michael Bay sequel ‘‘Transformers: Age of Extinction’’ and the Melissa McCarthy comedy ‘‘Tammy’’ led the weakest summer holiday weekend in at least a decade. The North American box office was down a striking 44 percent over the July Fourth weekend last year, when ‘‘Despicable Me 2’’ and ‘‘The Lone Ranger’’ opened. ‘‘Transformers’’ led all films with an estimated $36.4 million, while ‘‘Tammy’’ had a below expectations Friday-to-Sunday haul of $21.2 million. Paramount’s ‘‘Transformers,’’ the fourth in the series, opened the previous weekend with the year’s biggest debut with $100 million. The movie, with a rebooted cast led by Mark Wahlberg, dropped considerably (63 percent) in its second week of release despite relatively little competition. New Line’s R-rated, Midwest road trip romp, ‘‘Tammy,’’ boasts one of the most bankable stars in movies — McCarthy — but is a smaller, homespun movie made for just $20 million and directed by McCarthy’s husband, Ben Falcone. Despite being savaged by critics, the Warner Bros. release made $32.9 million in five days since opening Wednesday. The only other new wide release was the horror flick ‘‘Deliver Us From Evil,’’ which had no blockbuster ambitions. The Sony Screen Gems release, starring Eric Bana, opened in third with $9.5 million. McCartney back on tour
Paul McCartney returned to a concert stage Saturday after being sidelined for two months because of a virus, spinning out songs from the Beatles, Wings, and a solo career that has spanned more than 50 years of rock ’n’ roll. ‘‘It’s great to be back,’’ said McCartney, who turned 72 two weeks ago. He looked none the worse for wear, putting on a show of just under three hours with 38 songs before finishing with the three-song medley that ends the ‘‘Abbey Road’’ album. McCartney (inset) was briefly hospitalized in Tokyo in May because of the viral infection. The illness forced him to cancel a Japanese tour and a concert in South Korea and reschedule half a dozen June dates in the United States before resuming his ‘‘Out There’’ tour in Albany, N.Y. Before his illness, McCartney last performed May 1 in Costa Rica. McCartney opened with the Beatles’ ‘‘Eight Days a Week.’’ He wore black jeans and a sky-blue blazer. When he took the jacket off four songs in, he joked that it was the only wardrobe change of the evening. (AP)
Former ‘Scandal’ actor arrested in Dallas
Former ‘‘Scandal’’ actor Columbus Short has been arrested in Dallas for public intoxication. Dallas police said Short, 31, was arrested at 2 a.m. Saturday at the Katy Trail Ice House, a popular beer garden and restaurant. A message left at the restaurant on Saturday was not immediately returned. It is not the first time Short has had trouble with the law. In May, he pleaded not guilty to felony battery for a fight that seriously injured a man at a West Hollywood restaurant. And he faced a misdemeanor spousal battery case. Short announced in April that he wasn’t returning to the ABC hit drama series ‘‘Scandal’’ for its fourth season. The actor’s agent, manager, and lawyer did not immediately respond to messages Saturday. (AP)

‘Bridesmaids’ Fans Rejoice: Kristen Wiig Has Another Comedy Up Her Sleeve
Did you like Bridesmaids? Did you laugh so hard it hurt?
Well get ready to laugh out loud again, because breakout star Kristen Wiig is teaming up with co-screenwriter Annie Mumolo for another comedy, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The yet-untitled project will be Wiig’s directorial debut. In addition to writing and producing, both Mumolo and Wiig will star in the film.
The movie’s plot is still under lock and key, but according to THR, the comedic duo with play best friends way over their heads and out of their element.
“We’re very excited to be writing,” Wiig and Mumolo said in a statement. “We will be going into a cave for months to finish. An actual cave. We found one that’s nice and big. We’re putting a couch in there.”
Wiig and Mumolo nabbed a best original screenplay Oscar nomination for “Bridesmaids,” which earned a whopping $288.4 million at the box office worldwide.
No date has been set for the film’s release.

‘Blade Runner 2′ officially looking to bring back Harrison Ford
It’s official. Alcon Entertainment has put an offer out to Harrison Ford asking him to reprise the role of Rick Deckard in the untitled sequel, ‘Blade Runner 2.’
The film has big shoes to fill though, with the thirty-two-year-old original being listed as one of the ‘100 Greatest Movies of all Time’ by the American Film Institute (AFI) and having been added to the National Film Registry. Written by Hampton Fincher, screenwriter from the first ‘Blade Runner,’ assisted by Michael Green, screenwriter of ‘Green Lantern,’ the sequel needs Ford to pull it all together.
The seventy-one-year-old actor has already committed to pull Han Solo out of the closet forStar Wars Episode VII: The Creaking Bones of the Elderly. As a result, that may play a big part in his decision to jump into the role of Deckard again.
Also, after bombing at the box office in ‘Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,’ it is not certain that Ford will want to take another gamble by digging up an old role. The bigger question is: can they make the movie without the Deckard? Considering that movie goers, who are thirty year old today, were only two years old when the original came out, it might be safe to say that most teens to fifty year olds may not have seen the movie and may not care about a sequel.
It’s a risk that Ridley Scott may not agree to either. After having directed the first film, it is uncertain if he will agree to sign on as director this time around, but Alcon has said it would move on without him if he is unable or unwilling. Sequel success depends a lot on the dedication of fans of the original film, but since it was so long ago, the sequel has somewhat of a clean slate. The producers can play up to the millions of Ford fans, if he agrees to take on the role, or choose another lead with an equally large, or larger, fan base.

‘Other Woman’ Grabs Box Office Crown From ‘Captain America’
“The Other Woman,” a romantic comedy from 21st Century Fox Inc. (FOXA) starring Cameron Diaz, edged aside “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” the returning superhero blockbuster, to take first place in its weekend debut.
The new movie collected $24.7 million in U.S. and Canadian theaters, Rentrak Corp. (RENT)said in an e-mailed statement yesterday. “The Winter Soldier” generated $16 million for Walt Disney (DIS) Co. to place second after three weeks at the top. “Heaven Is for Real,” the returning faith-based movie from Sony Corp. starring Greg Kinnear, had receipts of $13.8 million to place third.
“The Other Woman,” which opened to negative reviews, achieved the top spot on a traditionally slow weekend in Hollywood’s calendar ahead of the summer blockbuster season this week that kicks off with the release of “The Amazing Spider-Man 2.” The Diaz movie was projected to collect $16.5 million by BoxOffice.com, a downgrade from the researcher’s earlier forecast of $18 million.
“This weekend is often thought of as the calm before the storm,” said Phil Contrino, chief analyst at BoxOffice.com. “‘The Other Woman’ seems smart counterprogramming, with the market ready for something aimed at women.”
“The Other Woman,” which also features Leslie Mann and Kate Upton, tells the story of Carly (Diaz), who discovers not only that her boyfriend is married but is also having another affair. All three women team up to plot mutual revenge on the three-timer.
‘Winter Soldier’
The movie generated a positive rating of just 24 percent on Rottentomatoes.com., a review aggregator.
“Diaz has her hands full,” wrote Stephen Holden in the New York Times. “This female revenge comedy is so dumb, lazy, clumsily assembled and unoriginal, it could crush any actor forced to execute its leaden slapstick gags and mouth its crude, humorless dialogue.”
The movie follows Diaz’s last outing, “The Counselor,” the thriller released by Fox in October, which collected a disappointing $7.8 million in its debut.
Since its release on April 4, in the biggest opening of the year, “The Winter Soldier” has taken in $208.8 million domestically as of April 24, according to Box Office Mojo. The success of the film highlights the popularity of Disney’s Marvel superheroes and the decision to release a blockbuster earlier than usual before the summer rush of competing pictures. It was forecast to garner $15.3 million this past weekend.
Religious Movies
The movie picks up the story of super-soldier Steve Rogers, played by Chris Evans, who battles a Soviet agent known as the Winter Soldier. Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, it cost an estimated $170 million to produce, according to Box Office Mojo.
“Heaven Is for Real” has been buoyed by favorable reviews and the swell of biblical and religion-based movies released earlier this year that have also achieved success, including “Son of God” from Fox and “Noah” from Paramount Pictures. The movie, projected to collect $15.2 million in its second weekend by BoxOffice.com, has taken in $38.1 million domestically as of April 24, according to Box Office Mojo.
The film features Kinnear as a small-town father who backs up his young son after the boy glimpses the afterlife during a near-death experience.
‘Brick Mansions’
“Transcendence,” the sci-fi thriller starring Johnny Depp, slipped to sixth place, to collect $4.1 million for Warner Bros. It was projected to garner $4.7 million. After missing estimates in its debut, Warner Bros. said the movie had failed to connect with audiences, and leaves Depp still seeking a comeback film after “The Lone Ranger,” his tentpole picture with Disney, flopped last summer.
“Transcendence” took in $10.7 million in its opening weekend in China, just shy of its domestic debut of $10.9 million, as Depp made a promotional visit to the country.
In the two other new releases this past weekend, “Brick Mansions” from Relativity Media LLC collected $9.6 million to place fifth.
It features the late Paul Walker as an undercover Detroit cop who works with an ex-con to bring down a crime lord and thwart his plot to devastate the entire city. It garnered a 29 percent positive rating on Rottentomatoes.com and was estimated to collect $8.5 million.
Revenue Rises
“The Quiet Ones” ranked seventh, taking in $4 million for Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. (LGF) The horror film, about a university professor and a team of students who conduct an experiment on a young woman, and uncover terrifying forces in the process, had been forecast to collect $4.8 million. It got a 39 percent favorable rating on Rottentomatoes.com.
Weekend revenue for the top 10 films rose 23 percent to $96.4 million from the year-earlier period, Rentrak said. Domestic box-office sales year to date are $3.14 billion, up 9.4 percent from a year earlier.
The following table has U.S. movie box-office figures provided by studios to Rentrak. The amounts are based on gross ticket sales for April 25 and April 26 and estimates for yesterday.

The New Transformers: Age Of Extinction Trailer Has Arrived
We all thought Michael Bay was done. Back in June 2011, before the release ofTransformers: Dark of the Moon, franchise star Shia LaBeouf announced that he would not be coming back for Transformers 4 and that he expected that the director was finished with the series. Bay did wind up taking a break from the world of blockbusters, making his small dark comedy crime caper movie Pain & Gain, but now he’s back, and he’s ready to introduce you to Transformers: Age of Extinction through a brand new trailer that was just released.
Based on a script by Ehren Kruger, who also had a hand in penning the last two entries of the franchise, the new Transformers movie moves away from Sam Witwicky and instead focuses on a new group of people living in the same universe. In the latest sequel we are introduced to Cade Yeager (Mark Wahlberg), a mechanic who, along with his daughter (Nicola Peltz) and her boyfriend (Jack Raynor), stumble upon something huge. Unfortunately what they have uncovered not only attracts the attention of the heroic Autobots, but also the evil Decepticons and a paranoid government official. Kelsey Grammer will play the film’s central human antagonist, while the supporting cast also includes Stanley Tucci, Titus Welliver, T.J. Miller, and Bingbing Li. While all three movies in the series have been huge box office successes, they’ve had a bit more of a mixed critical record. When the first movie came out in 2007 it was given a lukewarm response, but the last two movies, Revenge of the Fallen in 2009 and Dark of the Moon in 2011, were torn apart. Given that this movie is a semi-reboot, perhaps Age of Extinction will be the title that allows the franchise to be readjusted and get back on the right foot.

‘Non-Stop’ takes lead in box office with $10 million
Universal’s Non-Stop, starring Liam Neeson, surged ahead to take the lead in the weekend box office, snagging the spot from The Lego Movie, according to Forbes.
Universal’s Non-Stop, starring Liam Neeson, surged ahead to take the lead in the weekend box office, snagging the spot from The Lego Movie, according to Forbes.
Along with Neeson, the film stars Julianna Moore and 12 Years a Slave’s Oscar-nominated Lupita Nyong’o. The action thriller is set to bring in around $30 million over the course of this weekend. The Los Angeles Times reported that the action-packed film is expected to bring in $20 million over the course of the weekend.
20th Century Fox’s biblical film Son of God took the second spot and brought in $9.4 million. According to Forbes, half of that money ($4.5 million) was earned from advanced ticket sales made before the weekend. The film’s advertising was targeted more specifically at the religious movie-going market. Son of God was developed from the History Channel’s hit television miniseries, The Bible. According to The Los Angeles Times, churches and religious organizations have helped build hype and earnings for the film by renting out theaters and buying bulk amounts of tickets. The movie could possibly pass up Non-Stop for the top spot this weekend, and it is expected to break even (it cost $22 million to make).
“It feels like around $12 million, maybe $15 million,” said Chris Aronson, head of distribution at Fox in regards to Son of God’s possible box office success. ”But honestly, because of the faith-based element, we just don’t know, so it wouldn’t shock me if it did $25 million.”
The Lego Movie, with voice work done by Chris Pratt, Will Arnett and Elizabeth Banks, fell to third place with $4.4 million. Despite its fall, the comedy still fell less than 50% as compared to its box office performance last week. The family movie will likely pass the $200 million mark this Sunday, according to Forbes.
Kevin Costner’s recent film, 3 Days to Kill, grabbed the fourth spot and raked in only $1.45 million. The thriller was easily overpowered by Neeson’s Non-Stop and fell over 60% from last week’s performance. So far, the film has grossed $17.2 million.
The Monuments Men, starring Matt Damon, George Clooney, John Goodman and Bill Murray, took fifth place with $1.44 million. The film just edged out the disaster film Pompeii that brought in $1.2 million and has earned only $14.6 million total. According to Forbes, this was a 63% drop from last Friday for the film.
