Movie Review: 'Maleficent'

‘Maleficent’ is visually impressive and Angelina Jolie is perfect as the lead, but the film does not quite live up to the classic source material it is based on.
‘Maleficent’ is a retelling of the fable ‘Sleeping Beauty’ with the focus put on villain Maleficent (Angelina Jolie). Originally Maleficent is a fairy thrust into war as her land or fantastical beings known as The Moor is threatened by humanity. After defeating the king, she is betrayed by her human love, Stefan (Sharlto Copley), who burns her wings off. Soon, she begins building a dark kingdom in the world of fairies but returns to the human kingdom to get revenge on Stefan by cursing his newborn daughter Aurora (Elle Fanning) with a sleeping curse that will activate on her 16th birthday.
First off, Angelina Jolie was perfect as Maleficent.  Maleficent is a villain that begs to be overacted, yet Jolie does a great job portraying the classic character with a lower key performance that really works in the film. There are still moments where she goes a little over the top, but overall Jolie does her best work through subtlety and body language throughout most of the film. Elle Fanning was also impressive as Aurora, but Jolie is the real reason to see ‘Maleficent.’
I really enjoyed the films visuals, but there are times where I felt all of the visual wonder was partly wasted on such a light film. The design struck a good balance between ‘Alice in Wonderland’ and ‘Lord of the Rings’ for the fairy and human worlds, but the story didn’t really use the visuals to a great degree. The few action scenes are good, but It’s hard not to think how much better they would be if the film was allowed to go into the darker parts of Maleficent’s story.
Although I enjoyed ‘Maleficent’, I was expecting a better movie as a whole. Angelina Jolie did a great job as the lead, but the story didn’t seem to be able to fully embrace her villainous ways and as a result the film is much sweeter than the trailers led me to expect. The film is good, but I feel it could have been so much better if the would have taken some chances.

It's official: Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher are getting married!
On Thursday, E! News exclusively reported that the former stars of That '70s Show are engaged. They began dating in the spring of 2012, about seven months after Demi Moorecalled it quits with Kutcher. The future spouses have said little about their romance, save for a March 2013 interview with Elle. "People will fill in the blanks however they want," Kutcher said when he was asked about dating Kunis.
Following his November 2011 split with Moore, Kutcher become more guarded about his personal life. "You know, I've learned the hard way how valuable privacy is," he explained. "And I've learned that there are a lot of things in your life that really benefit from being private. And relationships are one of them. And I am going to do everything in my power to have this relationship [with Kunis] be private."
While neither Kutcher nor Kunis may be willing to talk about their romance, their PDA-packed trips around the globe certainly speak for themselves. As E! News celebrates their engagement, check out eight other costar couples who got engaged—and find out which ones have already tied the knot!

Aniston met her future fiancé on the set of Tropic Thunder in 2007; Theroux co-wrote the film with Aniston's longtime pal and Along Came Polly co-star Ben Stiller. "I thought he was very sweet and he was always very nice," Aniston told Pop Sugar in February 2012. "But I remember thinking he was very dark. At first you think he could be like a serial killer, but he is actually the nicest person in the world."
The actors reconnected on the set of Wanderlust and got engaged on Theroux's 41st birthday in August 2012. A year later, Aniston explained why they hadn't yet tied the knot. "Eventually we're going to get married when we find the time," she said on CBS' The Talk. "I don't feel like there's a rush."

Berry and Martinez met in 2010 on the set of Dark Tide, a $25 million thriller that grossed less than $500,000 at the box office. "Even when a movie ends up crappy, other good things can come out of it," Chelsea Lately host Chelsea Handler said in October 2012. Berry agreed, saying it was "a s--- movie." The silver lining, of course, was that the actress would later marry Martinez in France on July 13, 2013.
"When I first met Olivier, there wasn't the initial 'I'm in love!' It was something that grew more gradually—and it feels more real because of that," Berry said in the November 2012 issue of InStyle.
The actors welcomed son Maceo in October 2013. Berry has a daughter from a previous relationship.

The True Blood co-stars began dating in 2007, got engaged in 2009 and tied the knot in 2010. "There was an attraction, obviously and undeniably, but in your head you're going, 'That would be such a cliché!'" Moyer, who has two children from a previous marriage, toldPopEater in June 2011. "Our resolve didn't last long." The actors welcomed fraternal twinsCharlie and Poppy in September 2012.
Do Paquin and Moyer have plans to expand their family in the near future? "I think we've got just enough on our plate to keep us busy for now," the actress told E! News in November 2012.

The actors met on the set of Mr. & Mrs. Smith in 2004. At the time, Pitt was still married to Aniston. "I didn't know much about exactly where Brad was in his personal life. But it was clear he was with his best friend, someone he loves and respects," Jolie told Vogue in January 2007. "And so we were both living, I suppose, very full lives." Though Pitt denied being unfaithful while married to the Friends star, Jolie admitted they shared an emotional bond. "I think we were the last two people who were looking for a relationship. I certainly wasn't," she said. "We found this strange friendship and partnership that kind of just suddenly happened. I think a few months in I realized, 'God, I can't wait to get to work.'"
According to the Academy Award winner, it wasn't until the end of the film shoot that she and Pitt realized "it might mean something more than we'd earlier allowed ourselves to believe."

Months after his divorce from Aniston was finalized, Pitt sought to legally adopt Jolie's two children, Maddox and Zahara. They welcomed their first biological daughter, Shiloh, on May 27, 2006. The following year, the costars adopted yet another son, Pax; the process was finalized on Feb. 21, 2008.
Biological twins Knox and Vivienne arrived on July 12, 2008. By January 2012, however,World War Z star Pitt revealed that their six children were beginning to pressure him to put a ring on Jolie's finger. "It seems to mean more and more to our kids. We made this declaration some time ago that we weren't going to do it till everyone can," he said. "But I don't think we'll be able to hold out." Shortly after, Pitt popped the question after co-designing the ring with celebrity jeweler Robert Procop.

I don't know if I want to go to work with him. I'd be like, 'Okay already, you got the shot. Let's go home!'"
