'American Dream Builders' is here - and it's ready to takeover your life.
NBC's newest reality show 'American Dream Builders' is here to take over your life. So, be warned. Premiering tonight (March 23, 2014), the show features 12 designers and homebuilder handpicked by decorating guru Nate Berkus. The designers are split into two teams with each side tasked with renovating the home of one two lucky families.
"I wanted to do a show that showcased the best of American design" Berkus told the Chicago Tribune, "I also really wanted people who were established in their own communities, people who were total professionals and who had reputations that they wanted to protect. For me, that really raised the stakes because these people were not fighting to become the next big thing; in their minds, they already are."
Critic David Hinckley is unconvinced by the new show, writing in the New York Daily News, "We see personalities emerge, some helpful and some obnoxious. We see people who made bad decisions try to lay off the blame. We see designers who don't understand practical considerations like time. We see builders who don't accommodate design. We see people who have been assigned to work together show no ability to do so," - which should make the show irresistibly addictive, then.
More: Nate Berkus is engaged.
More: Nate Berkus underwent surgery for appendicitis.
Viewers of the show will be encouraged to submit a photo or video of a home project and enter a competition for the chance to win a $100,000 in products and services from Lowe's, as well as a consultation from the winner of 'American Dream Builders.'

Shailene Woodley Fears for the Fate of Planet Earth
Shailene Woodley,
American actress, is not shy about sharing her affection for an alternative
lifestyle. “The Secret Life of the American Teenager” starlet revealed that she
spent time as a child testing her survival skills in the wild. But besides
for knowing how to make shelter out of some sticks and leaves, the 23-year-old
revealed that she aims to live an eco-friendly life.
Woodley said, “My biggest fear is that people aren’t going to
realize in time that we are nature, and that we need to think about that fact
and respect that fact. People talk about global warming, the oceans, and the
rainforest, and we need to be talking about it, but nothing’s going to change
unless we change ourselves.” Woodley believes change begins with us, and
that if human beings don’t work on their own mental, emotional and physical
well-beings, then the future of the planet is uncertain.
She also admitted to not owning a cell phone, calling it a
“crutch” and divulging that she is not a “big technology person”. She said,
“I’m talking to people more than I’ve ever talked to in my life because I no
longer have that crutch. The more you get away from all the technological buzz,
the more freedom you have.” Woodley is wise beyond her years and is one
young Hollywood star walking the eco-friendly talk.

Italian Government Outraged Over Advertisement By American Small Arms Company Featuring Michelangelo’s David
The Italian government is up in arms over an advertisement by a U.S. weapons firm, ArmaLite Inc., which shows Michelangelo’s iconic statue of David holding an AR-50A1 rifle with the tagline, "A Work of Art."
Dario Franceschini, Italy’s culture minister, urged the Illinois-based company to withdraw the advertisement after images promoting the $3,000 rifle appeared on several Italian media websites over the weekend. The statue of David, on display at the Accademia Gallery in Florence, is considered a masterpiece of the Renaissance and was created in the early 1500s.
According to BBC, Franceschini's translated tweet said: "The image of David, armed, offends and infringes the law. We will take action against the American company so that it immediately withdraws its campaign."
According to a local news agency, Cristina Acidini, the superintendent of the State Museums of Florence, said that the copyright for the image of David is owned by Italy and that it cannot be used without legal permission. She also reportedly issued a legal notice to ArmaLite to withdraw the image.
Angelo Tartuferi, director of the gallery, told Repubblica newspaper: "The law says that the aesthetic value of the work cannot be distorted,” and added: "In this case, not only is the choice in bad taste but also completely illegal."
According to The Guardian, Sergio Givone, Florence's Councillor of Culture, called the advertisement "an act of violence towards the sculpture; like taking a hammer to it and perhaps, actually, even worse.”
Here are comments by some Facebook users who wrote on the U.S. company’s page about the advertisement, which was originally published in May 2013 but caught the Italian media's attention over the weekend after it went viral among Italian social media users.
"Why don't you use your own bloody monuments work of art?" posted one person.
Another user wrote: "Art is untouchable and can't be use to spread death. If you want to enrich your wallets use your own monuments, you have many."
According to reports, ArmaLite is yet to comment about the controversy.
