Lambesis approached his trainer for help in killing his wife
Tim Lambesis, the singer for US metal band As I Lay Dying, has pleaded guilty to attempting to hire an undercover agent to murder his estranged wife.
The singer, who initially denied the charge, could face nine years in prison for the attempted contract killing.
Lambesis, 32, who formed As I Lay Dying in San Diego in 2000, has sold more than a million albums.
He remains free on $2m (£1.25m) bail until he is sentenced 2 May in Vista Superior Court, California.
Lambesis had asked a personal trainer at his gym to help him get rid of his wife Meggan, claiming she had restricted his visits with their three adopted children after they separated in September 2012.
He was arrested in May 2013 after prosecutors said he met a sheriff's deputy posing as a hitman, called Red, and handed over $1,000 (£600) along with his wife's address and front door security code.
The undercover agent, San Diego County Sheriff's Officer Howard Bradley, testified last year that Lambesis met him at an Oceanside bookshop in May and said he wanted his wife "gone".
Bradley said he asked Lambesis directly if he wanted his wife killed, and the singer replied, "Yes, I do."
As I Lay Dying have released six albums, including 2007's An Ocean Between Us, which reached number eight on the Billboard charts.

Keep Buckhead Bieber Free!’ – Atlanta Community Protests
That is just one of the many cries of protests by members of the wealthy Buckhead community in response to the prospect of Justin Bieber moving into an $11 million mansion in their neighborhood, the Daily Mail reports.
Another is the message "#JUSTin SAY NO."
What with Bieber's recent $20,000 egg-throwing stint, vandalism, drag racing under the influence arrest and other legal complications that concerns controlled substances, the community's concern is understandable.
The community members are planning to stage the protest right outside of Bieber's prospected mansion at 6 a.m. on Monday.
Bieber's move into the area, reportedly close to where his mentor Usher lives, is due to his wish to get closer to the thriving Atlanta rap community which is home to T-Pain, T.I. and Rick Ross, among others.
The protest has a Facebook page that contains people's complaints regarding Bieber, as highlighted in the following.
"As a community here in Buckhead, we have worked hard to achieve our goals and get to where we are. Justin Bieber's relocation to Atlanta can be nothing but bad for our children, as well as the community."
"Some can't even let their children play in the driveway without fear; he has raced vehicles under the influence before. What's to say he won't do it again?"
"As a homeowner down the street from this residence, one can assume many people will be contacting real estate agents soon enough. Please do not allow a child to ruin what we have worked so hard to obtain. Thanks for the support"
Currently, 136 people have committed to the event, although not everyone in the community is planning to go, such as Buckhead Neighborhood Coalition president Sam Massell.
Massell, himself having been protested against by the community back in the 1970s, says that while he does not plan to attend, he will not welcome Bieber as well.
He believes that picketing is an "American form of expressing yourself" and that the community members' protest is a right, but so is Bieber buying a home anywhere he wants, NBC 11 reports.
According the Facebook page, the Coalition was formed to "protect the character and heritage of the Buckhead community" as well as to preserve "Buckhead's historic look and feel by fighting damaging influences from within and without."
